Gir Kesar mango, also simply called Gir Kesar, is a mango cultivar grown in the foothills of Girnar in India. Kesar mango is grown in
an approximate area of 20,000 hectare in the districts of Junagadh and Amreli in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, with an estimated annual production of two lakh tonnes.
The famous saffron-coloured Kesar variety of mango, largely grown around the foothills of Girnar mountains in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, has got global recognition as ‘Gir Kesar’ mango after being granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The Kesar mango is the second variety of mango in India to get GI registration after the Dussheri mango variety grown in Uttar
Pradesh. After the GI registration, mango growers in 18 talukas of Junagadh and Amreli districts, located on the periphery of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, will be able to reap the benefits of added value attached to their produce said by JAU officials.
Mangoes are widely used in cuisine. Sour, unripe mangoes are used in chutneys, athanu, pickles, side dishes, or may be eaten raw with salt, chili, or soy sauce. A summer drink called aam panna comes from mangoes.Mango pulp made into jelly or cooked with red gram dhal and green chillies may be served with cooked rice.
Mango lassi is popular throughout South Asia,prepared by mixing ripe mangoes or mango pulp with buttermilk and sugar. Ripe mangoes are also used to make curries. Aamras is a popular thick juice made of mangoes with sugar or milk, and is consumed with chapatis or pooris.The pulp from ripe mangoes is also used to make jam called mangada.
This variety of mango is usually produced to the market in April, with the cultivation beginning around October after the monsoon season. all varieties are good and healthy.
